Now seriously, hands up, who stole 2016?

I am sure I am not alone when I say "who stole 2016" ? And now in a blink of an eye, it is February. They say that the years zoom past as you get older, but seriously, is everyone feeling the same way?

Like all of us, we need goals, we need plans (well, me in particular) otherwise the days, weeks, and years, simply skip away in front of our very eyes. It works every day, day after day, month after month, year after year, in our professional lives, so why is it so hard to commit to a plan or goal in our personal lives?

Last year, my goal was to complete a half marathon. With my hectic travel and work schedule (combined with a multitude of excuses) my clothes were getting a little too snug in certain places. Well you could say, in a little too many places. To be perfectly honest, in a lot of the wrong places!

Reality hit when I had a constant ache around my upper rib cage, naturally I thought the worst. When my sensibility prevailed, I did finally reach the "A-HA" moment, I realised it was because my bra was getting too tight! From that moment I knew, I needed a plan, I needed a goal and that goal was to complete my first ever half marathon.

Running has always been my 'go-to' exercise regime, it is my thinking time and more importantly it is my stress release. Everyone prefers different fitness routines, non-runners often believe that us runners are crazy. In my case, a little crazier than usual, but running 'is my thing'. I am lucky to live in a rural area, so hitting that road and watching the sunrises and sunsets, saying hello to the cows along the way simply fuels my soul.

Believe me, being over half way to making that century, it was not easy. It was because I had 'that goal' because I had 'a plan', it kept me on track. It kept me getting out of bed, getting out of the office and getting out of my hotel room. Even when I could think of every excuse under the sun, I knew if I wanted to achieve my goal, I had to stick to the plan.

And I did stick to plan, it was harder than I ever imagined. It was 'a stinking hot day', there were hills, yes, constant hills. I was slower than "a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter" but with enormous relief (and near exhaustion) I made that finish line. I made my goal!

If you had asked me 12 months ago if I could run 21.5 kilometres and that I could run 14, 17, 19 kilometres regularly, I would have said "you were dreaming". If I did it again today, it would be a dream!

The truth is, without that goal, without that plan, the excuses have set in again. I need a new goal for 2017, I need to make a new plan before 2017 zooms past me at the speed of light. What will be yours?

Until next blog, stay happy, stay safe and stay in touch, Rochelle

P.S. have popped my gear out ready for a run in the morning - wish me luck!
